With claims to such famous musicians as Duke Ellington, it’s surprising that Washington DC isn’t better known for its vibrant music scene. Local acts takeover stages across the city and the surrounding areas every night of the week, and traveling artists – from little known singer-songwriters to artists gracing the airwaves – find themselves performing at unique venues. Whether you’re looking to hear jazz, rock, hip hop, or Top 40, here are a handful of the best live music venues in Washington DC.

9:30 Club

You won’t find a list of live music venues in DC that isn’t topped by the renowned 9:30 Club. It’s so popular that Esquire named it the best music venue in the country. This eclectic, fun venue is housed on the popular U Street Corridor, a top Washington DC attraction. The best part about this venue is its ability to attract as many established big names as rising stars. It’s a dark venue, crowds are inevitable, the bartenders are quick, and there are great views of the stage from just about anywhere. Far warning: jump on tickets fast, or you’ll miss them altogether.

Howard Theatre

Located in the Shaw neighborhood of DC, the Howard Theatre completed a $29 million renovation in 2012. The historic venue is credited with launching the careers of such inimitable acts as Ella Fitzgerald, Marvin Gaye, and The Supremes. The Theatre is well-known for its incredible acoustics and wide-range of performances. There’s even a Sunday Gospel Brunch features the Harlem Gospel Choir.

Rock & Roll Hotel

This hipster-laden, grungy, dive bar is located on the H Street NE corridor and is one of must go places for nightlife in Washington DC. It features multiple levels, with live shows taking place on the first floor, dancing and events on the second, and a rooftop terrace that is always packed. This venue does a great job of featuring local acts and up-and-coming bands. There are always cheap beer specials, and on weekends you can hop from the show downstairs to some of the best dancing upstairs.

The Fillmore

While not technically in Washington DC, this Silver Spring staple attracts some of the most popular acts to grace the DC area stages. The sound system is often lauded. There’s a unique design to the place that makes patrons feel like they’re on stage. There are VIP tickets with seating on the second level for those who don’t want standing-room-only tickets.

Bohemian Caverns

There are jazz bars all around the city but none are quite as esteemed as Bohemian Caverns. The name is about as apropos as it gets – this place really is like a cavern. It’s small, cozy – to say the least, and a little old school. The lights are dim, the chairs are velvet colored, and the ambiance is a bit romantic. Local talents call this place home. The food can be hit or miss, but let’s be honest – you’re coming here for the incredible music.
